When I am Afraid, I Will Trust in You

ImageLife is scary. I would compare it to a roller coaster. It’s an adrenaline rush. You enjoy it, but there are times when you are mid air in a loop that seem more than frightening. Approaching the ride, blood rushes throughout your body – you feel a charge.

Yet, when you take that turn and hear the clinking of the hill that you are about to free-fall down, fear sets in – your heart races. The cart you are inside drops and flips and you are left staring at the ground below you. This moment in time, though fleeting, feels like it will never end.

Will you fall out of the cart – or live to tell the story of overcoming this ride the next day? This experience incites fear and excitement. But fear typically trumps energized senses.

It is easy to fixate on the hard times in life. Remember Jesus said, ‘I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.’ {John 16:33} He also tells us, Do not be afraid; only believe.’ {Mark 5:6}

Trials in life make us stronger. It’s like breaking a bone. Yes, it is easy to fixate on the pain of that broken bone. It hurts – but, it is only for a time. That bone grows back thicker and stronger. That is a medical fact. It is said that the area that was broken becomes denser and is therefore stronger. Isn’t that like life? Trials, fears and failures teach us and make us grow stronger and more courageous.

Trust. It’s so hard to trust when we are afraid. One of my favorite verses as a child was Psalm 56:3. It states, When I am afraid, I will put my trust in thee.’ I had this note plastered to the walls in my bedroom. I’d look at it at night – just to reassure myself that God was there with me – and there was no reason to fear the blackness of my room when the lights were out. I also like what George MacDonald said, ‘A perfect faith would lift us absolutely above fear.’ Amen. However, we can never have a perfect faith. We can aspire toward it like we can aspire toward holiness – and this is grand!

Focusing on faith alleviates fear. I am so inspired by the story of Helen Keller. This was a woman that overcame the odds and flourished beautifully. She has motivated and still encourages so many to this day. She had faith – and truly believed God when he said ‘Do not be afraid.’

I am sure in her darkest moments she felt a deep seeded terror. This woman lived in darkness physically – but, hallelujah carried within her the light of Christ! She was recorded as saying, ‘It’s wonderful to climb the liquid mountains of the sky. Behind me and before me is God and I have no fears.’ Wow, what words! Trust always, even if you are in the air of a roller coaster loop. God has your best interest at heart. He loves you with an everlasting love. When you are afraid – trust. When you trust God – there is no room for fear in your life.

From My Heart To The Heavens, Jesus Be The Center

Image“You were made by God and for God – and until you understand that life will never make sense.” These words said by Rick Warren struck an artery in my heart this afternoon. I felt a rush through my body as if the blood in my veins was pumping just a little bit more freely.

Made by God. As Christians, we know this. It is something taught in Sunday school. Genesis explains that God breathed life in Adam and Eve was formed from man’s side. But, if this truth really transcends your mind – and reaches your soul – it is absolutely exquisite that you carry within in you the breath of God – the breath of Heaven – as a famous song points out. He inhaled into you air from his wondrous, everlasting lungs. This is not something to shrug off as typical religious knowledge. The breath of God is in the fiber of your being. It makes up who you are. You carry within you – air from the Living God.

Made for God. What was I made for – what is my gift, my calling? Its simple – to be a lighthouse for Christ. You are his vessel. Like a mason jar illuminated on a front porch step, you are the light in the night of this dark world. Everything else is really minor. You are God’s billboard. How you live your life, what you say and do should reflect God. You are his face on earth. Of course, God wants you to prosper and make the most of your life here on earth. He wants you to pursue your passions and dreams; but, with those dreams is also a yearning and need to reflect Christ. It is shallow without ever filling that innate soul yearning. We are simply the reflection of our light source – the Son of God.

Life Makes Sense. Pastor Warren is right. Without understanding these concepts {that are way more complex then they appear} we will never really understand life. Life is simply empty without Christ as the center. I love the song that boldly proclaims, ‘From my heart to the Heavens, Jesus be the center. It’s all about You. Yes it’s all about You.’ As humans, we tend to make life about ourselves – our plans, our future, that promotion or raise at work, that desire for a family or children, that house that we’ve always dreamed about – our wants are endless. And we will always be empty if we reach for our desires – for they are not his! However good they are – Jesus will always want more for you! Yet, with Jesus as the center of it all, don’t those personal needs dissipate just a little bit? We are spiritual beings and our soul years for a spiritual connection. We can never be good without God. Knowing that we were made by God and for God puts life in perspective.

I will loudly cry out, Jesus be the center of my life!

Reading is Real. Classic Book Inspired Coffee Mugs Under $20

Books warm the soul. I love the C.S. Lewis quote, ‘Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become.’

The art of reading has simply died, and this is sad. I read a blog post yesterday titled, “18 Things Everyone Should Start Making Time For Again” and making time for real books was #6 on the list.

I love what the author says, ‘Actual hard copy books that you can scribble notes in and mark off sections of and smell ink through and hear the sound of turning pages and bending spines while you read.’

I do not want to knock the kindle or the iPad – but doesn’t it feel different to highlight and write things to the side of those tangible pages? Flipping through old books is one of my favorite things to do. It is neat and inspiring to read old notes to yourself or once illuminated thoughts.

Thinking back, I can remember crying through ‘Wuthering Heights’ and seeing my salty tears stain the pages – even to the point of leaving wet wrinkle marks. I cherish that book to this day. My Bible is marked with multicolored highlighters, pages are earmarked and notations abound but I would not have it any other way. This makes life real to me – not just a virtual world.

I think a challenge to me and to you should be to take time to read. Pull out a highlighter and mark that book up. Think on a special phrase or Bible verse. Write in a notepad or to the side of the page what it means to you. You will look back and appreciate the time you carved out to do this.

Be human. Don’t live in a virtual world. Engulf the classics. Sit in a reading chair with a cup of coffee or tea (maybe one that reminds you of your favorite childhood book) and drink in the words. Words impact people and people impact the world. Be a World Changer!

Praise For The Everyday

ImageI wake when it’s dark. The sun is still waiting to show its happy face to the world. Hardwoods creak and morning barefoot feet shuffle to the kitchen.

Body realigning from last night’s rest, I stretch to the popcorn ceiling like a long branched tree and fill my lungs with air. This is one of life’s simple moments.

It’s Sunday and we have so much to be thankful for – after all, November is the bounteous month of pure Thanksgiving. So often times I forget to list off my beautiful gratefulness. I forget to praise God in the small and simple; but, I surely rejoice in the large and extravagant.

However, I will take today to say thank you for the everyday.

I praise you for the toasty leaves that grace the cold ground, the misty afternoon rainbows after a soft shower, princess china cups filled with warm chamomile tea, tender human embraces, shining crescent moons in the night sky, woolly mittens on chapped hands, thick spiral notebooks with pages for heart words, dark grey laces on pink tennis shoes, neon post it notes for precious reminders, cocker spaniel wet kisses…this is my everyday life, and I praise you for the here and now.

My thanks is overflowing. I am a cup and you fill me up. I praise you, Lord, for the everyday – for it is all a precious gift. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. – Psalm 23:5

Baylor University – Quite Possibly The Best College Ever.

homecoming

The Homecoming Parade circa 2007.

I bleed green. Not really – but my allegiance is defiantly to the Green and Gold, Baylor University that is.

Although there is not a football game today, I will still Baylor represent. I think it’s good to educate non-Baylorites about the rich history of BU.

Quick facts about the Green and Gold:

Chartered in 1885 by the Republic of Texas: that’s right – Baylor is the oldest operating university in the great state of Texas. That is pretty awesome.

Kenneth Starr: he is our current president. Starr served as a federal Court of Appeals judge and as solicitor general for George H. W. Bush. He received the most publicity for his tenure as independent counsel while Bill Clinton was U.S. president. Wow, super awesome.

Green and Gold: these are our school colors. A little color psychology – green is the color of growth, balance and harmony; whereas gold represents wealth, prosperity, wisdom.

Dr. Pepper Hour: since 1953 students have enjoyed this delightful Dr. Pepper social float hour every Tuesday. It’s all you can eat/drink. Delicious!

Big XII Conference: Baylor is the one of two private schools in the Big 12. Sic ‘em! TCU is the other private one. Does that really count?

BU Boots

This is acceptable on campus. Buy these Texas boots, here.

Live Bears on Campus: Grrr – I mean, really. The bears names are Lady and Joy. How classy!

Sic ‘em: How awesome is it to hold up your bear claw at games!? In 1960, Baylor’s yell leaders introduced the “Bear Claw” hand signal, made by slightly curving all five fingers inward to form a claw, and the “Sic ‘Em Bears” yell.

RG3: Heisman Trophy – and Washington Redskins. Need I say more?

The largest and longest collegiate parade in the nation: yep – and it’s a unique experience. Larger than life floats at every turn on Homecoming day, this parade is a crowd pleaser.

SING: basically Broadway performances by fraternities and sororities – who have practiced all YEAR for the title of SING Champs.

So more than three cheers for the GREEN and GOLD.

Sic’em and beat OU next week.

Eat Like Michelle Obama: Tips On Making Your Own White House Kitchen Garden

white house gardenYesterday was a pretty neat fall day. I toured the White House Fall Garden with a good friend and Taylor. I was not really sure what to expect, but it was pretty educational – and we got to see the First Lady’s Kitchen Garden, which I had wanted to see in person.

I’m sure you are familiar with this garden. It has been touted in her campaign to end obesity and harvested for the DC Food Pantry. Michelle Obama has even written a book about it, ‘AMERICAN GROWN: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America.’ Here is a book review on it – if you wanted to read more. Also, this looks like a great book if you wanted to read about all the U.S. President’s beautiful gardens!

As I scanned the greenery of her garden and saw the signs for peppers and lattices overgrown with ivy like plants, I wondered just what is planted in her garden and can I make one to?

So here is the gist ladies – you too can make one. Obviously, not on this grand of a scale (you don’t have gardeners paid to tend to it); but, who says you can’t turn your balcony or little patch of green backyard into a little harvesters dream for one or a small family?

lbj tree

Looking at the LBJ tree – channeling my Texas roots.

Mrs. O is currently growing – various kinds of lettuces (one being the peppery arugula), blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, peas, spinach, fennel, carrots, kale, herbs and broccoli. Fitness Magazine reports that the White House spent about $200 on start-up seeds alone for the garden (so it can get a little pricey to start your own!)

So, here are a few little tips that might help when even contemplating starting your very own garden:

Start small. If you are a condo dweller, like me, space is limited. I (have not yet) but am planning to start a little herb garden in the spring and also plant some lettuces. These seeds are inexpensive to plant and will save you bucks in the grocery store.  Organic lettuce can be pricey. Johnnyseeds.com sells a variety of organic salad seed mixes. How fun! You can harvest your own salads.

Plant produce that you can plan a meal around. Fitness Magazine also suggests, “Heartier items like squash, potatoes, and beans can substitute for meat and still be satisfying.” Remember, I made a whole meal around spaghetti squash a while back.

Connect with an online gardening community. Kitchen Gardeners is a pretty cool website to find out what plants work best in specific climates. Here is an online site that lists some online gardening communities to join – check it out here.

All in all, you can start a garden, maybe not just like the First Lady’s, but you can save a pretty penny on some organic produce by growing the hearty stuff at home. Give it a try. I know, I will.

The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul. – Alfred Austin

And this Bible verse is also beautiful…

Build houses and live in them; and plant gardens and eat their produce.

– Jeremiah 29:5

May our life be like fall – crisp, ruddy but real!

ImageMy feet enter the bed of crunchy leaves –raked in precision. Hair glistening auburn in the speckled sunlight – it’s fall. The air smells like pumpkin scented candles, my skin, rippled with goose bumps is no longer a toasty tan from the summer months. It’s pristine white like pillars of ivory.

The chilly afternoon breeze is the reason for my ice-cold reaction – these little dots of frosty membrane on the covering of my bones. Yet, I don’t seem to mind.

The air is fresh. Chimney’s sputter out grey smoke into the distance and the quiet, plump husband and wife doves coo in the distance. It’s a coo of peace and fulfillment. I scan the rich, warm scenery to spot this feathery couple– they blend in to the nature around me. They are impossible to spot. Very well, I think, this was God’s intent, his way to protect and cover them in the wild. Their music soothes my soul.

Laughing. Whirling of crispy leaves. These are things I remember from childhood. Stillness. Peaceful painted sky. Orange plastic Jack-o-Lantern trash bags with goofy, toothless grins and cozy loose knit sweaters. Warm apple cider. A great hunt for mossy sticks in the yard in order to build a crude fire in a spacious Texas ranch home. Dirty hands. Lungs full of air. Safety, comfort – this was my autumn world.

But was this how it was – or just how I pictured it? Thinking back on this world fills my imagery with the aroma of perfection. It is easy to look back at this memory and visualize grandeur. Moments of care-free bliss. Often times, early memories are aggrandized.

The Swiss Miss cup of grocery store hot chocolate turns into a gourmet, milk chocolate fashioned in the North Pole. The breeze I thought was too cold (and I might have complained about) develops into a crisp, fall day over time in my mind. And the leaves that I once clasped a hold of – were not clean, they were earthy and, more than likely, carried crawling critters.apples

However, isn’t this like life? It’s a crazy beautiful mess – not how you picture it, but the little moments create sweet memories and lasting love. No matter how nicely you frame the scenery – whether with a gold embellished frame or a rustic wood one, that bowl full of water and floating apples looks appealing – but when seeking for that perfect crisp fruit, your head and hair will still get soaking wet – but you capture that sweet prize. You embrace life.

May our life be like fall – crisp, ruddy but real! God did not promise a life of ease – but one full of trials, triumphs, failures and joy. One of promise. It’s important to really digest the truth that promise cannot be obtained without practice.

We may fall on our knees and soil those brand new jeans, but we get up – knees stinging in pain. A gnarly branch may catch our hair and mess up that perfect, neat bun, but we fasten back that tangled hair with a bobby pin and continue on, unaffected by appearance.

Can you hear the doves in the distance – the ones coupled in peace?

They have reached promise. And we are on a journey to obtain that as well. Let’s pray for peace and rejoice in the dirty nature, falling leaves and water soaked apples for they make us into sturdy vessels. No longer cisterns of stagnant water – we are the flowing living water of God!

What Successful People Do In The Morning

successful pplIn the morning I find peace. I like to wake up at 5:30am most mornings and just take my time to get ready. Shuffle to the kitchen with my hair in a messy bun for a cup of coffee. Pajama pants wrinkled from a long night sleep, it’s nice to ease into the day ahead – to really take in the rich aroma of the homemade brew – to reflect and listen in the stillness.

You can visualize work, think on life, utter prayers to your Maker, read a chapter of that novel you have been promising yourself you will finish, do a few yoga poses, run to the sound of first light, take your dog on a walk and hear the bird’s fist daylight song, listen to a radio show or make boxed lunches for your family.

In this post is a chart of a few things you can do in the morning that will maximize your day and maybe give you a little more peace and joy.

Movers and shakers make the morning hours their Bethlehem. It is not surprising to find that CEO’s wake at daybreak to start their day off right. Though you might be tempted to turn on that noisy TV – it’s best to sit in the quiet and reflect. Think. These are your hours. In these moments you can choose chaos or opt for peace.

Michael Acton Smith, CEO of Mind Candy states, “I purposely try not to check my phone or turn on the TV first thing in the morning. I have my best ideas when my head is clear of distractions and I’m getting ready to leave the house. I’m fresher and have a clearer head. I find being creative later in the day much harder after a jumble of meetings, phone calls and other distractions.”

It takes willpower to do what is important to you. Aristotle offers word of wisdom here, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” I think it is important to make waking in the morning hours a habit.

Even the psalmist says, “O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.” (Psalm 63: 1-2)

Chunky Jewelry: Evening, Work & Weekend

I am such a fan of chunky jewelry. Of course, you really need to know how to wear it – so it’s not gaudy looking. Believe me, that can happen, and I think we have all been there before. Whoops – the power of trial and error.

But, you can really dress up an evening dress, plain work outfit and monochromatic weekend look with some pretty, chunky pieces. I like wearing a statement necklace with subdued earrings. Pearl or gold studs are my favorite choices.

Image

An example of a smart purchase!

I put these looks together in this chart – as an example of an evening, work and weekend look where the chunky jewels are accomplished.

However, these picks are expensive – warning.

I think it is important to wear wedges at work – to save your pretty, little feet from pain down the road. And boots with a tiny heel are ideal for weekend fun. Yet, go out on a limb when you are partying after work. Wear those stilettos. Who knows, you may just meet Mr. Right in them? You want to accentuate your assets when going out on the town!

Sadly girls, we are not all millionaires and can’t afford these exact choices above! However, I also included a picture of a purchase of mine that cost me a whopping $25 dollars: sweater, necklace and earrings included. I am going to pair it with a black pencil skirt for a cute work outfit. Thank goodness for places like Burlington Coat Factory, TJ Maxx and Marshall’s. Not going to break my bank for a pair of 1k earrings. No thank you. But, you can still look stylish and feel good about being thrifty.

Let me know what you think about these outfits! Do you like chunky jewelry too?

Is Your Cutting Board Harboring Germs?

Who doesn’t like fresh cut veggies? I do. However, chopping up these little bits of goodness requires a cutting board. I have a cute bamboo one that I like to use for just about everything. I like the feel of it – and it looks cleaner and just more natural than the plastic colored ones. But, is it harboring germs?

The common perception is that wooden cutting boards hold ickier, little germs – but is this really true? I think there are benefits and disadvantages of wooden and plastic boards. However, let’s go to the experts to tell us what the various reasons are.

Wooden Boards: Dean O. Cliver, PhD, professor emeritus of food safety at the University of California, Davis (who has been studying this issue since the early 1990’s – this guy is no joke!) research found “that wooden cutting boards seemed to pull the bacteria down beneath the surface of the cutting board, where they didn’t multiply and eventually died off.”And although some experts say that every time a knife scratches the surface – germs reappear, Dr. Cliver’s research found that “the bacteria never reappear on the surface.”

Plastic Boards: In Dr. Cliver’s same research he found “the plastic [boards], after manual washing as I would do under my kitchen faucet, we could still recover bacteria from grooves.” The Hospitality Institute of Technology and Management has found that unless plastic cutting boards are soaked nightly in bleach, they are very prone to absorbing hard-to-remove food residues that could promote the growth of bacteria and black mold.

Now, don’t take this research (above) as the solid truth. Every cook has her favorite cutting board…etc. This is actually a highly debated topic in the cooking realm. I think it’s fair to say, stick your cutting board in the dishwasher after use. This should be a no-brainer. In the long run a wooden cutting board will hold up longer (less stains) and is defiantly a softer surface for your knives.
