You are Here for a Reason

here for a reasonLife is hard. It is definitely not for the faint of heart. It’s difficult to navigate through the rough seas that seem to engulf your understanding of your precious purpose. You don’t see God’s hand and don’t feel his effervescent love at times – and that’s alright. You are human and the world is dirty and dark.

However, that does not mean his love is not present in your life. No, quite the opposite! God has never promised us that it will be easy; but, he promised us that we will never be alone. Sure, we can feel alone at times, but crack open his word and you will see that this quite frankly is not the case.

“Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. Who have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.” – Psalm 73: 23-25

Say that to yourself – he is continually with you! What a beautiful promise to mediate on!

Your vision can be clouded by the shroud of businesses, work and pace that seems to encircle us on a day to day basis. But – remember to look to the sky and consider your purpose. Because, dear one, you were made with a heavenly purpose in mind. This morning I was reminded of this promise by a sweet, sanctified song which says,

“Every time that you wake up breathing, Every night when you close your eyes, Every day that your heart keeps beating, There’s purpose for your life, So don’t give up, Don’t lay down. Just hold on. Don’t quit now, Every breath that you take has meaning – You are here for a reason.” – Ashes Remain

So do not be forlorn or disheartened if you do not feel your purpose just yet. Know that you are here for a reason. Allow yourself to be a bright beacon for Christ and shower his love on others today. Be the lighthouse in the rough sea in someone else’s life.

You are You – and that is Beautiful.

Hairy. Awkward. Out of place. We can all feel this way at times. The foamy, hard waves of doubt and insecurity can crush the spirit. And, that devastating sea wall can sting leaving us cold, afraid and uncertain. My dear one – never feel uncertain when you are engraved in Christ’s hands.

The impact of the wave and diffidence in this stone cold world is downright dreadful. Simply staggering because our soul was meant to soar! Yet, we can become so downtrodden by the day, circumstances and harsh words that lash us like cattails.

Rejoice in your features. Dance in your distinction. Garner goose bumps after hearing your one-of-a-kind voice. Yes, we are all created different and that is something to celebrate. Red curls top my head and freckles line my face with subtle dimples; whereas others have hair as black as the night and skin like toasted almonds. What visions in the image of Christ!

“The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17

It breaks my heart to see women and men alike – hold their heads in shame over their beautiful images. I, myself, am guilty of this from time to time. But, the truth is – you were created with a purpose and a master design.

Like a dream house that has intricate blueprints – you were a dream and the vision of your maker. Your smile was formed by his hands and your hair woven together in his goodness. Goofy and overused as the phrase is – you were born an original, don’t die a carbon copy.

It is calming to study all the marvelous creatures that God made by his mighty hands. No species is the same. You have the little bumpy frog that ribbits comfortably on a pond of floating seats and the Scottish highland cow that roams the meadows peacefully covered from head to toe in long orange hair. Each beautiful creations in the Maker’s sight.

However, they were not made in his image – we were! How much more does he care for us. It is unbelievable; we can never fully grasp how much God loves us. He sacrificed his son to save us. That is utmost love.

“If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it. If He had a wallet, your photo would be in it. He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning… Face it, friend. He is crazy about you! ” Max Lucado

Let us not walk around defeated, feeling inferior. Today consider this post a daily dose of encouragement. You are precious in his sight. You carry God’s light and that, my dear one, is nothing to be ashamed of.

Shine that light brightly. You were made for a purpose – no matter how awkward or out of place you feel. And, God has you in his sight. You will never be alone. That is amazing grace.

Oh To Be Sheep!

sheep

This is how we should feel under the guidance of the LORD. Comforted, protected and warmly loved.

Oh to be sheep! How abundantly blessed we are to be placed in this position. We have one shepherd and (amazingly) he calls us by name.

How marvelous! Out of the whole heard of fluffy creatures – he knows us individually.

We know his voice as well and should be full force willing to go where he leads. This Miracle Maker Guide has enabled feet to walk on water, has turned water into wine and raised a man from the grave.

My hope is in him all the days of my life. But we don’t have to blindly follow. He has opened our eyes and said, ‘trust me.’

He tells us no one will snatch you out of my hand. He stands guard over his flock of sheep. Like a pillar of fire by night, this shepherd protects us and by day he says – follow my footpath.

“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.” – John 10: 28-29

Oh to be sheep! How blessed we should feel. Our protection is covered.

The Heavy Rocks of Insults

gentle and kindMy profession is one that requires thick skin. Politics. Insults are hurled, names are called and facts are more often than not – twisted and gnarled. In a world that is fallen and not our own, I guess this should be expected. I have learned to lean not on my own understanding and in all my ways acknowledge him and he will direct my paths.

Yes – God is at work in you and he will not (never ever) forsake you. Yet, reading insults are hard (even if they are not about you). They eat at your core and your spirit. They create a heavy heart and disappointment.

I am a firm believer in encouragement – that we need to build each other up in love (1 Thessalonians 5: 11-12). Why aren’t we doing this more often – in politics and personal lives?

Everyone is going to disagree. We all were formed with different, diverse minds. And, thank God for that! Like 1 Corinthians says, we all cannot be the ear of the body – we have to have arms, eyes and knees to make everything work in a cohesive pattern in the Body of Christ. So debate is not what I am talking about when I mention insults. I am talking about the bitter, biting personal attacks – ones that attack someone’s character without getting to know their soul.

As a conservative, I have seen it coming from the liberal side more often (merely because this is the pattern I observe regularly). But, we are all to blame. Whatever happened to the command, ‘Love one another as I have loved you?’ We certainly do not have to agree with someone to love them – and lift them up in prayer.

I point a finger back at myself writing this little post. I have been guilty of this thought process to accuse those that are not like you. However, novel thought, instead of condemning them, why don’t we lift the accused in our minds up in prayer to God the Father? Pray for those who persecute you that is a Biblical promise.

Jesus displayed this best, when he uttered on the bloody cross: Father forgive them for they know not what they do. He also famously said – those without sin, cast the first stone.

My knuckles have been white a time or two from clutching onto that shameful stone of accusation. But, it’s time to drop those rocks of callousness and embrace each other.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not advocating skipping together hand-in-hand and disappearing into a delusional rainbow of peace and love. 1 Thessalonians also says to abstain from every evil. Yet, it also notes, do not repay evil for evil.

To take from a famous song, ‘what the world needs now is love sweet love.’ And what better way to display love Jesus’ way – because he is love. How absolutely breathtaking to act out his love with our words spoken to one another.

A challenge to myself this week will be – to speak love through my actions and deeds. Life is too short to spew hatred and vile comments to one another, whether you stand in accordance with that person or not.

I love the children’s song which goes, ‘God is still working on me to make me what I ought to be.’ The King is at work in hearts and minds across the globe. He is not dead. Let’s choose to be the face of Jesus who allowed Mary, a sinner, to douse his feet with oils and her tears. He did not recount her sins to the world or hurl insults her way, he forgave her completely in love.

Fall & The Grateful Practice

pumpIt’s fall – the season for crunchy leaves, coats, leggings and pumpkin spice lattes. This season really warms my heart. It is my favorite season hands down. Its fun to see the pumpkin patches full of orange, plump fruit on the side of the road and oooh and awww over babies draped in head-to-toe fleece sitting plop in the middle of a sea of burnt orange pumpkins. Like seriously cute!

Fall envelopes me with cute ideas – I scour Pinterest for fluffy outfits and craft projects. This season fills me with a fervent passion to conquer. However, I tend to forget that fall is also a season of thankfulness. After all, after Halloween comes Thanksgiving. Turkey dinners simply should not be a standalone meaning for that precious holiday.

I practiced an exercise this week. Think of the things that make you angry and frustrated sometimes – and flip those trials into something you are grateful for. I know, it was a hard task; but, I did think of a few things that I wanted to share.

My commute into work. Driving in my car and sitting in a gridlock of traffic bothers me. I hate to admit it; but many times – it just makes me blood boil. People in fast, pricey cars cut you off in the merge lane (I speak from experience) and then people who are texting or talking on their phone can take forever to realize that a lane is moving. Yet, in this midst of this chore – I am thankful for my drive in. I get to pass the Pentagon, Washington Monument and U.S. Capitol every single day. What a joy! There are many people who never get to experience this marble, monumental grandeur every single morning. So I thank God for that experience and my eyes that can see such wonder.

Walking my dog. I live in an apartment – so, literally every single time my dog has to go potty, I have to take him on an elevator and outside into the little doggie park. This can be a pain especially when it’s like 20 degrees outside and snowing or when I am just flat out tired from work and want to plop down on the couch. But, I thank God for my legs that are able to walk outside – for the ability of mobility and the beautiful feeling of the crisp, clean air I get to breathe. The pumping life that I breathe in and out of my life house!

Convoluted city living. Living in the city can be rough, we discussed traffic in a point above – but the living quarters are pretty tight too. Parking spaces are rare and – everything just takes much, much longer to complete. Maneuvering around DC can be pretty bleak. However, I am so thankful to everything that is proximity to me. One weekend, I can experience Gettysburg and the next, I can walk on the Fisherman’s Wharf and enjoy some fresh fish – prepared right in front of me. I can tour Mount Vernon or even walk on the West Lawn of the White House and experience a garden tour.

I encourage you to practice gratefulness this week. Think of three things that are the bane of your existence and flip them around to find something wonderful in that chore. Remember that a smile is a frown turned upside down.

Paper Crowns Torn; Crown of Thorns Embraced

Life. The human life – breathing, living, flapping wings of life is perfectly gorgeous. The thought of life should excite the soul. Human contact, laughing and loving is what we were fashioned for – by the hand of the living God. We were formed to give love and collect it. And what a joy it is to collect the perfect love of our beautiful Savior. What a complete joy!

Like stepping stones in fresh, wet grass – his mercies are new every morning. He whispers in a voice like the lapping, salt laden ocean and sprays us with new direction and solid vision. Pupils, dilated with the excitement of his beauty, we think about life, this life we were given.

STONES

“The LORD your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17

The butterfly rebirth. From filthy state to fragile wings. We were endowed with so much beauty. The beauty in the everlasting heavens above and the splendor in the presence of the Christ.

Vessels of a living, breathing God. A God that walked on earth, took the scornful death and heinous treatment for us. That’s the truest picture of beauty there ever was. Chills. It sends chills up and down my spine. It engulfs me in a wave of amazement. Paper crowns torn. Crown of thorns embraced. Hurt in human life, pain in death, triumph over the grave – and pristine forgiveness and elegant hope.

Dancing, forgiving hope. A hope that washes our faces and kisses our foreheads. This hope places sandals on our worn feet and oil on our tangled, matted tresses. Hope of life – in his death.

May we ever embrace his hope. Breathe in and out – fill your lungs with his goodness. The air circling your clay vessel shape. Life. There is always life and hope around you. It’s made possible through the sacrifice – so we might live full.

The Night Communion Balcony

The sun sets over the big clunky buildings in the distance. No longer having the U.S. Capitol view I had grown accustomed of, I look at the lush trees framing the interstate. I traded in a city view for more space, longer commute and a balcony. Not a bad trade and on days like today I am so thankful for the change.

Forty-five minutes of yoga and a dog walk under my belt, and I am finally serene. After calming down from a mind laden with work worries, I sip on some red wine (compliments of Trader Joe’s) and think about life – the living breathing life. I think on the heart pumping life that grabs you by the hand and seizes your very lungs and soul.

Here on this balcony, there is no one to answer to. I am lost in my thoughts, in this moment, in this communion with God. My mind goes to him – my friend, my invisible observer, and I am captivated. To onlookers, I look alone and content. But, I can feel his presence near me.

Never alone. That is the title to a Lady Antebellum song. Yet, it is the mantra of a Christian’s life. How hopeful and superbly wonderful! As I listen to the sounds of the night and the last mocking birds chirping song, this provides my chest with much needed rest.

I inhale deeply and exhale in relief. I don’t have to live up to this world’s standards of success. I can just be me and be confident that I was made in the image of the Holy One. High heeled success does not match up to the victory of wearing a crown fashioned by the majestic God. Living up to the crown of honor is my mission.

My heart is wedded to the man who, even before birth, has called me his beloved. He brings peace to the chaotic. He makes sense of the messy and he recycles the scent of my mistakes into something glorious and utterly edifying.

Like broken bottles of oil, I want the fragrance of my soul to delight his heart. I pray the passion in every strand of my hair glows with an aura of the living God. In the silence, these are the thoughts that come to my mind. Outside in the breeze of the summer night, after hard work, I reflect.

What if the world took just a few minutes each day to reflect in the silence? It is said, your heart and mind drift to those who you hold most dear – those that consume that pumping, coveted space in your chest. Let us take time daily to reflect on living, loving and praising. Let’s reflect on life and it’s insanely beautiful purpose – to love God and others.

Where do you think your mind will wonder this evening?

Do You Ever Picture God As A Lion?

lionDo you ever picture God as a lion? I do. And, in fact, I do this quite often. There is something about the safe mane and sturdy body that provides my heart such rest and a sense of safety.

I look at pictures of this majestic creature and just think, ‘that’s my Jesus.’ The paws of precision and the coat of pure silky fur glowing in the sunlight. To take from The Newsboys, ‘my God is not dead, he’s surely alive living on the inside roaring like a lion.’

Reading C.S.Lewis’ book, ‘The Lion, Witch and The Wardrobe’ almost brings me to tears every time. When I read statements from Aslan (the lion protagonist) my heart is stirred with such love and my body ripples with goose bumps.

This character was meant to portray our Savior and Lewis does a tremendous job in painting a picture of fire, love and courage all in one animal. He is the fearless leader in the book, resilient and kind.

This is one of my favorite exchanges in the book between Lucy and Aslan:

“How can we live, never meeting you?” cried Lucy. “But you shall meet me, dear one,” said Aslan. “But there I have a different name. You must learn to know me by that name. This was the very reason you were brought to Narnia, that by knowing me here for a little, you may know me better there.”

I long to know God better. I want to look into those lion eyes and cry, ‘you bled for me.’ You were tied up, hung and ridiculed because of me.’ Some days, here are on earth, may be tougher than others to rest in the security of his mane. Things that are not in our control happen daily. But, dear heart, your lion has overcome the world for you. Hold your head up high.

Talk to God. Cast your cares on him – for he cares for you. If it helps, picture the Lord as the king of all creation – a lion gentle, kind yet fierce (because he is!). And, rest in the shadow of his great paws of protection. He will pounce for you and roar in a weighty sound into the night. He will breathe life into hearts of stone for you because he has the power to do so. And he is your king.

Be in love with your life, every detail of it.

lvoe lifeWe are all striving to greatness. Evolving, if you will, into better versions of ourselves day by day. The more I learn about God, the closer I draw to him, the sweeter I become. And, this is simply because I am clinging onto his goodness not my own strength.

However, I think it is important, while we are striving for more fulfillment and depth in our Creator God, to love where we are in the moment. We need to love every aspect of our lives.

“Be in love with your life, every detail of it.” – Jack Kerouac

Contentment is such a hard concept to truly grasp. But Beauties, you are fully complete in Christ and he stands over your charming braided head with a plentiful bucket of provision and blessings.

Although you obviously want to become the best version of yourself possible, your Savior recklessly loves you right where you are at. Whether it is picking up the pieces of a broken relationship, making a move into another job, figuring out where you want to go in life next, quitting a riddling addiction, striving to look and eat healthier or simply sifting through your passions and interests. He loves you.

Now it’s your turn to love you and love where you are at. Don’t let that thief, comparison, steal your joy. God has you where you are – for a reason. Trust him. Trust his reasoning. He is good and perfect – and so is his will!

I Love Every Moment With You

every momentDear One, you are never alone with Christ. He loves every single moment with you. He is not a fair weather friend who only loves and celebrates the exciting times –the times we document on Facebook and Instagram (you know what I am talking about). He loves being in your presence every minute of every hour.

When you brush your teeth, he enjoys seeing you take care of yourself. He delights in you pouring that bowl of healthy cereal or cutting that ripe green apple – for you are his! He smiles at you lacing up your tennis shoes to jog those 3 miles after work. How can he not enjoy watching you, someone he created in his image, live life to the fullest!?

It warms his heart to see you worship him –to sing his praises in the car, church or quietly at home. It moves him to hear you claim his rich promises.

He whispers to you all day, ‘I love every moment with you.’ And, he means it.

You do not have to fear being alone – ever. For you have a Savior that is omnipresent and stands watch at the bedroom door of your house. He holds a flame of protection and the ruddy aroma of his provision. He is there, while you sleep, cry, pray, praise or lament. He is present.

Take a moment today to celebrate that you are never alone. You always have an advocate in your midst and someone who rejoices in the milestones of your life and also the mundane.

O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit or stand. When far away you know my every thought.  You chart the path ahead of me and tell me where to stop and rest. Every moment you know where I am. You know what I am going to say before I even say it. You both precede and follow me and place your hand of blessing on my head. This is too glorious, too wonderful to believe! – Psalm 139: 1-6
